I hated this movie.
On the surface, the arc of this romcom's narrative is that a kind woman is errantly suspected of dating her rich boyfriend just for his money, but after a series of unfortunate misunderstandings she is happily received by all his family and friends into their circle of social elite. She has made it, rags to riches, like Cinderella.
However, with the exception of perhaps four individuals, that very same social circle has persistently displayed vile behavior toward her for the entire story. They take advantage of her trust while accusing her of being a gold-digging liar. They insult the hardship she and her mother endured while invading her family history. They terrorize her with 'pranks' straight from The Godfather.
Through the mere act of getting engaged, she is finally 'welcomed' into this den of hateful vipers. In a story which utterly glorifies the moral obscenity of a snobbish few hoarding endless wealth, and the wastefulness of burning that money on extravagantly banal activities, this is her hard-earned ending: a lifetime of transparently vapid, two-faced acquaintances, being stalked by the paparazzi, and overbearing guilt from an abusive mother-in-law. Those people who remorselessly killed an innocent animal and left its corpse to rot in her hotel room bed? Bygones. They're her friends now. Clap your hands at the happy ending, audience.
